
Copilot Autopilot sounds useful, but guardrails matter. GitHub’s March releases for Copilot in VS Code include Autopilot in public preview, where agent sessions can approve their own actions, retry on errors, and keep working until the task completes. I can see why developers want that. There is a real difference between a tool that needs constant babysitting and a tool that can work through a task while you get on with something else.
The risk changes once the agent can keep iterating on its own. When it only suggests a change, you accept it or you do not. When it can approve actions and continue, the question becomes whether the whole loop is pointed in the right direction. That means teams need to be clear about which commands it can run, which files it can touch, whether it can change dependencies, what tests must pass, and what still needs human review.
Autonomous work is most useful when the task is well-bounded: fix this failing test, add this validation, update this component to match the existing pattern, generate documentation from this source. It gets riskier when the task is vague and the system is complex. That is where senior engineering judgment still matters, because a good engineer knows when to delegate and when the task needs clearer boundaries before anyone starts changing code.
I like the direction, but only with the boring controls in place. Autopilot-style coding sessions will probably become normal for well-scoped engineering work. Without good tests, clear review expectations, and sensible permissions, autonomy just helps you make mistakes faster.
